Is it illegal to access an email account if the password was knowingly given by the account owner? Even without expressed permission to access the account?

That you know how to gain access does not mean you may do so, even if the owner told you how to do it. A friend has entrusted me with a key to her home, but that does not mean I can enter whenever I want to. I need her express permission. The same principle applies here.
