The baboo pieces are extremely heavy and space-consuming. Silk is extremely expensive. Both of these media made literacy an elusive art among the wealthy and the few. Most people did not have access to books because these materials are so hard to replicate. Then after paper was invented, transportation, replication both became much easier. Literacy spread to a larger population and the cost of writing became much lower.
