What type of degree do you need to earn to become a camera operator?
I got my BA in Radio-TV Communications, HOWEVER I also took many university courses in Theater and Film Studies as well. This is very important to gain a well-rounded sense of WHAT a camera operator is actually filming/video taping.HOWEVER, working HARD and NOT COMPLAINING on the set will get you your next job, paying or not. Doing a lot of stuff for free when you are starting out will also help a lot. No one gets anywhere without "giving" a lot away at first to get the connections... unless you are born into the business, but if you were you wouldn't be concerned about this question at all. The truth of the matter is: You Don't Need a Degree to Work in the Film or Video Business. MOST people have them, because you do need to be diligent and know a lot of facts, many of them pretty scientific, like lens characteristics, lighting and electrical properties, etc.But I've never had a degree be a prerequisite for any real work.I learned more about real-world film-making on my first low-budget feature film than in four years of school... BUT to be honest I don't know what exactly I learned in school it was that allowed me to get on that first job!!! So school is very important indeed.Hope that helps...From:A working freelance film and video cinematographer and camera-jocky for 20 years!
