What ict systems does super markets use?
Nicknamed EPOS by many (Electronic Point Of Sale). The system is firstly a database at the backend with terminal inputs (the tills) at the from of the operation. The system uploads delivery (products delivered to the store) or can have a manual input of stock arrival. This has the bar-codes associated with the product and includes a range of associated information i.e. tax, description, retail price excluding tax, internal recognition number etc
The system will, in many setups scans the items and calculate the the selling prices and prints a receipt. Once the TOTAL button s hit the system will consider all the items in that transactions sold and therefore leaving the retailer. It will deduct from the holding stock that quantity sold to leave a balance amount.
Newer systems in many retailers now allow for a "direct from warehouse" and "direct from manufacture" deliveries. These are normally large or special items like furniture etc
Added to this is the integrated system EFTPOS, Electronic Funds Transfer point of sale . These machines now handle loyalty cards, discount cards credit and debit cards and function with little if any actual cash in the till systems as its all classed as electronic. There are literally hundreds of different POS software systems in existence at this a time
