7 What are the main teachings of Deming to the Japanese?
W Deming is the Father of Quality Management. Having designed a process to afford manufature to moniotr and improve its opertion he tried to interest the USA Industrial Sector - They were to say the very least un-interested. In 1950 he took his ideas to Japan - introducing engineers to the;
PLAN: Design or revise business process components to improve results
DO: Implement the plan and measure its performance
CHECK: Assess the measurements and report the results to decision makers
ACT: Decide on changes needed to improve the process
(simplified for here) he took time to generate interest from the shopfloor to the highest managers. Introducing a system called SPC -Statistical Process Control
is a proven effective system of monitoring a process through the use of control charts.
Much of its energy lies in the ability to monitor both process center and any variation around that center. By collecting data from samples at various points within the process, variations in the process that may affect the quality of the end product or service can be detected and corrected. This is used to reduce waste as well as the potential that problems will be passed on to the customer. The emphasis is on on early detection and prevention of problems later. Having spoken to these Japanese Deming basically left them to it - He returned 4 years later and was stunned to find that they had implemented the processes and were already seeing huge benefits - The rest, as we know about Japanese manufacturing is history
